A new study has revealed the cities in the US that are most likely to swear on a regular basis. Shockingly, New York ranked among the least likely to curse.
The tutoring platform Preply surveyed 30 major U.S Cities stating,
We surveyed over 1,500 residents of 30 major U.S. cities to determine which cities swear most frequently. We asked them how often they swear, the situations they swear in the most, and even the age they uttered their first swear word. But don’t worry, no profanity will be used in this post!
In Las Vegas residents swear an average of 30 times per day and came in second. Reigning in third place is Jacksonville, Fla. with an average of 28 times daily.
New York, much further down on the list, tied for 11th place with El Paso and Chicago. Those living in more modest cities use an average of 17 curse words a day.
The report found that the average American swears approximately 21 times per day, however over half of the interviewees will use a substitution for swear words, such as “fudge,” “heck” and “holy cow.”
Matt Zajechowski, the study’s author, told The Post, “Americans swear and they swear a lot. Americans swear at both good news and bad.”
The study found that younger generations are more likely to swear as well. Generation Z is cursing up a storm with an average of 24 times a day. That was more than twice what the baby boomers were reported to use.
Men were also more likely to use vulgar language, with an average of 22 curse words a day, compared to 18 for females.
Zajechowski said he wasn’t surprised by the amount of profanity that is used, but was shocked at the age that people reported they started cursing. The average American reportedly starts swearing at age 11. However, those in San Jose, California generally begin using foul language starting at the age of 9.
