Cop Suffers Life-Altering Injury at Champions Parade

A dedicated police sergeant, Justin Dodge, who sustained a serious leg injury during the celebratory parade honoring the Denver Nuggets’ historic NBA championship, has sadly undergone a leg amputation due to complications from the incident. The injury occurred on June 15 when a fire truck carrying star players, including the 2023 NBA Finals MVP Nikola Jokic, made its way through the jubilant crowds. Dodge, a member of the SWAT team responsible for crowd control, was attempting to protect the truck and its occupants when his leg became trapped under one of the tires.

Eyewitnesses described the incident as the truck slowly turned the corner at the intersection of Cherokee and 13th Street. Despite its slow speed, the tire trapped Dodge’s leg, causing a significant lower leg injury. Following three surgeries aimed at saving his limb, Dodge ultimately received the news that amputation was necessary. On July 7, a fourth surgery removed his leg below the knee, followed by a successful skin graft.

Despite the devastating loss, Dodge has shown incredible resilience and a desire to use his experience to inspire and support others. Colleague and friend, Colorado State Patrol Maj. Brandon Means, praised Dodge for his unwavering positivity, noting that Dodge aims to spread optimism and bring the community together through his journey of recovery. Furthermore, Dodge remains resolute in his determination to return to his beloved job, expressing unwavering confidence that he will resume his regular duties.

The law enforcement community has rallied behind Dodge, expressing their admiration and respect for his character and service. Means emphasized the overwhelming support from fellow officers, highlighting their eagerness for Dodge’s return to the force.

To assist with Dodge’s medical and rehabilitation expenses, his family has launched a website, sgtjustindodge.com. The site aims to share Dodge’s story and gather financial support from the community. In a heartfelt message on the website, the family expressed their deep gratitude for the outpouring of love, prayers, and concern they have received, acknowledging that mere words cannot adequately convey their appreciation.

As Sgt. Justin Dodge continues his recovery at home, his unwavering determination and the support of his loved ones, colleagues, and community serve as a source of inspiration. His story reminds us of the resilience and strength of those who dedicate their lives to public service, and their ability to overcome adversity and find ways to positively impact the lives of others.
