A strange and mysterious “doorway” has been spotted in Antarctica, and the internet is buzzing with wild theories. Could this be the entrance to Bigfoot’s vacation hideaway? Or maybe it’s a futuristic shuttle straight out of “Star Trek”? One thing’s for sure—when something this bizarre appears on Google Maps, people are going to talk.
It all started when a Reddit user posted about a peculiar structure they found in Antarctica. The coordinates—69°00’50″S 39°36’22″E—pinpointed an area just southeast of the Japanese-run Showa Station. Intrigued by what they saw, the user captioned the discovery as a “Massive door in Antarctica?” and left the rest to the internet’s imagination.
Theories exploded like fireworks. Some thought it was the “door to Agartha,” a mythical city said to be located within the Earth, while others speculated it might be a massive seed vault, similar to the one in Svalbard, Norway.
But hold on—before anyone packs their bags for a trip to a secret underground world, scientists have chimed in with their take. According to Professor Bethan Davies, a glaciologist at the University of Newcastle, the reality is much less thrilling than a hidden utopia or alien technology.
When she examined the coordinates using Google Earth Pro, she identified it as an iceberg lodged in fast sea ice. As Davies explained, this iceberg became grounded in shallow water near a cluster of islands, where it’s now melting in place. The surrounding area is dotted with similar icebergs, making this feature a fairly common sight in the icy wilderness.
Adding to the explanation, Professor Martin Siegert from the Grantham Institute clarified that what we’re seeing is simply the result of natural ice flow interacting with the environment. He noted that the ice, influenced by katabatic winds, had created an interesting but entirely ordinary glacial formation. In short, while the pattern looks strange, it’s nothing out of the ordinary for Antarctica.
What is that! Mysterious ‘doorway’ in Antarctica is discovered on Google Maps – as baffled viewers suggest it could be Bigfoot’s vacation home or a shuttle from Star Trek

Volcanologist Professor John Smellie of the University of Leicester even joked that conspiracy theorists are having a field day with this one. He described the “doorway” as nothing more than a rocky ridge exposed by the ice receding around it.
The illusion of a doorway comes from parallel snow trails, which have been shaped by the wind over time. And while it may spark the imagination, Smellie assures us that this is all just a “weak and totally false door-like appearance.”
So, there you have it. No Bigfoot mansion, no secret alien base—just a natural glacial phenomenon playing tricks on our eyes. Still, isn’t it fun to dream about the hidden mysteries of the frozen continent, even if the truth is a bit more… grounded?
