MSNBC Begins New Lineup

Ohhh, it’s getting spicy in primetime—and not in the way MSNBC execs were hoping. Let’s talk about what’s shaping up to be one of the most dramatic nosedives in cable news viewership in recent memory.

Just weeks after a splashy rebranding and lineup overhaul, MSNBC is getting hit with a brutal reality check: viewers are bailing, and “fast”. The network is down a jaw-dropping “41% in primetime among the key 25-54 demographic”—and that’s not a typo. Total day demo? Down 34%. This isn’t just a slump—it’s an “evacuation”.

And at the center of the storm? Jen Psaki. The former White House Press Secretary stepped in to take over Rachel Maddow’s legendary 9pm time slot four nights a week. Maddow even passed the torch with a blessing, claiming Psaki could “outperform her”. But as the May numbers now show? Not even close.

Psaki’s May 22 show couldn’t even break “1 million viewers”. Meanwhile, over on Fox News, Sean Hannity was pulling in more than “2.3 million”. And in that all-important 25-54 age group? Psaki had “55,000 viewers”. Hannity? “210,000”. Yikes.

And let’s not forget “The Weeknight”, MSNBC’s new 7pm panel show hosted by Symone Sanders Townsend, Michael Steele, and Alicia Menendez. It was supposed to replace “The ReidOut” and stabilize early evening numbers. Instead, it’s drawing just “707,000 viewers”, with only “56,000” in the demo. Compare that to the 1.2 million who tuned in at 7pm last year, and you’re looking at a “36% ratings collapse”.

Even Maddow herself, the network’s longtime anchor and ace card, isn’t immune. Since the reshuffle, her Monday show averages “1.8 million viewers”—down from 2.4 million just a year ago. And it gets worse: Psaki’s long-term average of “973,000 viewers” is a “46% drop” from Maddow’s numbers during Trump’s first 100 days.

And let’s talk about the elephant in the studio—”Fox News is thriving”. “The Five” continues to dominate cable news with “3.77 million viewers a night”, and Fox overall is the “only” major network posting “year-over-year growth” in both total viewers (+21%) and the demo (+22%). CNN’s not soaring, but even they’re beating MSNBC in the demo—except at 10pm.

As if the ratings weren’t enough drama, MSNBC is seeing real cracks form behind the camera. Steve Kornacki, the network’s stats wizard and election night MVP, is stepping down from his MSNBC role, moving full-time to parent company NBC. That’s a major signal something’s up.

And Ari Melber? The popular host of “The Beat” is reportedly exploring his exit—possibly even planning his own media venture. That would be a big blow to MSNBC’s 6pm slot and their broader strategy, which leans heavily on digital talent like Melber to buoy YouTube views and streaming potential.

And don’t forget: Comcast is now spinning MSNBC off into its own publicly traded entity. Translation? Pressure’s on to deliver real numbers—and so far, the new primetime team isn’t even coming close.

MSNBC’s big bet on a bold new lineup is backfiring in real time. With viewership collapsing, anchor shakeups on the horizon, and competitors soaring, it looks like the network’s primetime makeover is turning into a ratings nightmare. For a channel hoping to own the anti-Trump lane in this election cycle, the timing couldn’t be worse.
