Drew Barrymore, actress, and talk show host boldly talked about her sobriety in the most recent issue of her magazine Drew.
As reported by Entertainment Tonight, Barrymore, 47, wrote in her “Take Care of Yourself” essay, “One of the bravest things you can do is slay those dragons and finally change an awful cycle in which you’ve found yourself stuck. For me, it was to stop drinking.”
Barrymore who became sober in 2019 said that ridding herself of alcohol was “one of the most liberating things in my journey of life.”
She continued saying that it has allowed her “to finally become free of the torture of guilt and dysfunction.”
Barrymore first revealed in December 2021 that she had been sober for 2 1/2 years following her divorce from Will Kopelman, with whom she shares daughters Olive, 10, and Frankie, 8.
Barrymore’s journey to sobriety has been a long one. Barrymore first revealed her difficult journey in 2021 when she had already been sober for 2 1/2 years. However, her beginning was not pleasant. Barrymore described that she had her first drink at 9, smoked weed at 10, and started using cocaine at 12. By 13, Barrymore had been in a drug rehabilitation program twice. Barrymore described in detail her difficulties in her book Little Girl Lost.
Eventually, Barrymore pulled herself together enough to rebuild her career. Once she started making movies again, she found herself drinking in order to “get out of my own head,” she said in 2018. However, she stated that she never did drugs again.
Barrymore wrote that her journey to self-care has left her more open to finding love.
“I can’t wait to meet that easygoing person with whom I can just be happy,” she says. But I haven’t found them yet, though I believe they are out there,” she said.
