As millions of viewers tuned in to Netflix’s live special “The Roast of Tom Brady” on Sunday, it was a night of laughter and cringes as comedian Jeff Ross took the stage as the roastmaster.
The Kia Forum, among many others, couldn’t help but feel a sense of discomfort as Ross joked about the NFL’s most iconic player.
Dressed in a bloody No.32 jersey with “Roast J Simpson” printed on the back, Ross wasted no time diving into the roast. He poked fun at Tom Brady’s career, from being the 199th pick in the NFL draft to his bold claim to Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots, that he was the best decision the organization had ever made.
But it was Ross’ massage joke that had the audience and Brady himself, squirming in their seats. The joke referred to Kraft’s 2019 arrest for soliciting prostitution at a Florida massage parlor, which caused quite a media frenzy. However, Brady’s quick reaction to the joke showed that even the best of the best can still get caught off guard.
Despite the uncomfortable moment, it was clear that Ross meant no harm and was simply doing his job as a roastmaster. And even Brady himself showed that he could laugh at the joke, as he approached Ross at the podium and whispered a playful warning to not say that again.
Moments like this remind us that even in the midst of a roast, there is still camaraderie and respect among friends and colleagues.
The audience’s reaction also showed that they could appreciate the uncomfortable moments, as they erupted into laughter and applause. As the roast continued, Kevin Hart, the evening’s host, couldn’t help but poke fun at Ross for trying to kiss up to Brady after the uncomfortable moment. But, in true comedic fashion, Hart quickly moved on and continued the night’s festivities, showcasing some of the biggest names in comedy taking their best shots at Tom Brady.
But ultimately, the highlight of the night was the hug and exchange of words between Ross and Brady, showing that even amidst jokes and jabs, there is a mutual respect and admiration for one another.
And while we may not see another NFL roast with Brady as the center of attention, we can still appreciate the moments of laughter and camaraderie that were shared during this event.
