Gerard Butler Tells How He Almost Killed Co-Star On The Set Of ‘P.S. I Love You!’

It’s not every day that an actor’s mistake on set almost costs his co-star her life. But for Gerard Butler and Hilary Swank, that’s exactly what happened on the set of “P.S. I Love You” in 2007.

During an appearance on “The Drew Barrymore Show” this week, Butler recalled the incident that almost killed Swank. The actor explained that while they were working on a scene where his character, Gerry Kennedy, was supposed to get undressed, the metal fastener of a suspender clip got stuck, released, and flew over his head- directly into Swank’s face.

“I cut her open. You could even see the teeth [of the clip]. She had to get taken to the hospital,” Butler said. The actor also noted that the camera crew had plastic fronts to protect themselves from the flying metal- making the incident that much more preventable.

Butler continued saying, “Imagine this studio, and in three seconds, everybody’s gone. And I’m just sitting there in my Irish [shamrock] boxer shorts and my boots and a pair of socks, and I just started crying. I scarred Hilary Swank. I almost took her eye out, and I just made a fool of myself for two days.”

“I scarred Hilary Swank. I almost took her eye out, and I just made a fool of myself for two days,” he said and called his former co-star a “great” person to work with.

The incident left Butler feeling embarrassed and regretful, saying “I scarred Hilary Swank. I almost took her eye out, and I just made a fool of myself for two days.” He later added that Swank was a “great” person to work with.

News of a sequel to the beloved movie broke in February 2020, although no statements have been made about Swank or the other original stars’ involvement.
