Law enforcement authorities in Michigan apprehended a 10-year-old boy who managed to steal an SUV and embarked on a daring high-speed chase along Interstate 75. The incident took place in Buena Vista, Michigan, where the young boy, who had been staying with relatives, reportedly sought to visit his mother over the Memorial Day weekend. What followed was a gripping pursuit that involved police, OnStar technology, and an unexpected detour into nearby woods.
The Buick Encore SUV was reported stolen from a residence on Hess Avenue in Buena Vista. Soon after, Saginaw County Central Dispatch received a call from OnStar, the subscription-based vehicle service, alerting them that the stolen vehicle was heading south on Interstate 75. Michigan State Police promptly sprang into action, locating the SUV near the Birch Run exit. However, their attempts to bring the vehicle to a halt were met with non-compliance from the young driver.
Dashcam footage captured by the troopers reveals the stolen vehicle swerving between lanes with its hazard lights flashing. The police pursued the boy for approximately a mile, activating their lights and sirens while remotely disabling the vehicle. Although the chase posed a significant risk to public safety, the situation was defused when the stolen SUV grazed a guardrail and finally came to a halt.
Following the vehicle’s stop, the determined young boy quickly exited the car, making a daring escape attempt on foot into nearby woods. However, the troopers swiftly caught up with him, preventing any further escape. Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident, which could have had potentially disastrous consequences given the dangerous nature of the chase.
The 10-year-old boy was subsequently taken into custody and transported to the Saginaw County Juvenile Detention Center. However, as of Monday, he was reported to no longer be in custody. The child now faces several charges, including unlawfully driving away a motor vehicle, fourth-degree fleeing and eluding police, and assaulting, resisting, or obstructing police.
