Well folks, it’s been quite the ride for Olympic golden boy “Ryan Lochte” — and now, the 12-time medalist is opening up about hitting rock bottom, checking into rehab, and beginning what might just be the biggest comeback story of his life.
In a candid Instagram video, the 41-year-old swimmer revealed that he’s “54 days sober” after voluntarily entering the UF Health Florida Recovery Center in Gainesville. It’s not his first time seeking help — Lochte spent six weeks in rehab back in 2018 following an alcohol-fueled hotel incident — but this time, the stakes feel higher, the context darker, and the recovery more urgent.
So what sent Lochte spiraling this time? According to him, a near-fatal “car crash in 2023”, where he collided with a garbage truck on his way to pick up his kids, was the breaking point.
What followed was a spiral of depression, isolation, and substance abuse that Lochte says pushed him to the edge. “I was in a really dark place,” he confessed. And if you’ve followed Lochte’s life — the scandals, the highs, the crashes both literal and metaphorical — you know that darkness has always lurked just beneath the surface of that all-American grin.
The rehab stint comes on the heels of a very public split from his wife of seven years, “former Playboy model Kayla Rae Reid”, who filed for divorce back in March. Reid called it one of the most painful chapters of her life — and though both kept the details vague, it’s clear the marriage had been under serious strain for a while.
Now Lochte is dating “Molly Gillihan”, a 37-year-old kindergarten teacher, and seems determined to rebuild his life brick by brick — starting with sobriety, stability, and maybe a little less drama this time around.
Of course, this is the same Lochte who once claimed to be robbed at gunpoint during the 2016 Rio Olympics, only to be exposed for fabricating the entire story after reportedly vandalizing a gas station bathroom.
That single incident — dubbed one of the biggest Olympic embarrassments in recent memory — torpedoed his image, got him suspended, and cost him a fortune in sponsorships.
At his peak, Lochte was America’s Olympic heartthrob — six gold medals, endless endorsements, and a bromance/rivalry with Michael Phelps that had fans swooning. But after Rio, it all fell apart. Protesters stormed “Dancing With the Stars” during his appearance, he lost $100,000 in bonuses, and major brands dropped him like a hot mic.
But here’s the twist: Lochte “isn’t” done. Not by a long shot. Whether this marks a new chapter or another pause before the next plot twist, Ryan Lochte is back in the spotlight — not on a podium this time, but at rock bottom, clawing his way up.
