Riley Gaines just added a brand-new title to her already headline-making resume: mom. The former collegiate swimmer and conservative activist welcomed her first child, a baby girl named Margot, on September 29, and shared the news in a heartwarming Instagram post alongside her husband, Louis Barker.
“There’s nothing that could’ve prepared me for a love like this. God has blessed us beyond belief,” Gaines wrote, her caption paired with sweet photos of the couple cradling their newborn. For those who’ve followed Gaines through her rapid rise into the national spotlight, this marks a deeply personal and tender milestone in the middle of what’s been a whirlwind couple of years.
The couple’s love story began at the University of Kentucky, where both Gaines and Barker swam competitively. They tied the knot in 2022 and just months later, Gaines became one of the most prominent voices in the ongoing debate over transgender athletes in women’s sports — a topic she dove headfirst into after tying for fifth place with Lia Thomas, a trans swimmer, at the 2022 NCAA Championships.
And if you’ve been paying attention, you know the headlines didn’t stop there. In June, Gaines found herself in a very public online feud with Olympic legend Simone Biles. After Gaines criticized a Minnesota softball team for fielding a transgender pitcher, Biles hit back, calling her a sore loser and accusing her of bullying the trans community. But within days, Biles walked it back, issuing a rare public apology — and to her credit, Gaines accepted it gracefully. Cooler heads prevailed, and both acknowledged the complexity of the issue.

Amid all of that, Gaines took the stage at Turning Point USA’s Young Women’s Leadership Summit in Texas and revealed her pregnancy. With a smile, she joked to the crowd, “How many men do you know that have this?” while showing off her baby bump. Her husband chimed in too, thanking the crowd for fighting for “the next generation” — the very one they were now expecting.
The birth of Margot comes at a time when Gaines’ activism has earned her praise from prominent conservative figures, including former President Donald Trump, who invited her to the Oval Office when he signed an executive order barring trans athletes from competing in women’s sports. That moment cemented Gaines as a leading voice in the cultural battle over gender and fairness in athletics.
Now, as she steps into motherhood, Gaines does so with her message louder than ever — but this time, the stakes feel even more personal. With baby Margot in her arms, the fight she’s waged for competitive equity in women’s sports isn’t just political anymore. It’s generational. It’s real. And for Gaines, it’s only just beginning.
