Officials Give Update On Investigation Into Death On Cruise Ship

The case surrounding the tragic death of Florida cheerleader Anna Kepner just took a disturbing turn. The 18-year-old, who was found dead aboard the Carnival Horizon cruise ship on November 8, is now at the center of an FBI investigation—and court documents reveal her own 16-year-old stepbrother is a suspect.

This shocking detail came to light during a heated custody battle between Anna’s stepmother, Shauntel Hudson, and her ex-husband, Thomas Hudson. Both are vying for custody of their two younger children, and in legal filings, Shauntel dropped a bombshell: she accused Thomas of domestic and physical abuse. Even more chilling, one of the alleged victims is the very son now being looked at by the FBI in connection with Anna’s death.

That same teen, identified only as “TH” in documents, is currently staying with a relative as federal investigators dig into the circumstances that led to the high school senior being found wrapped in a blanket and covered in life jackets, reportedly stuffed under a bed on that cruise ship.

In response to the abuse allegations, Thomas Hudson fired back with claims of his own—accusing Shauntel and her new husband, Anna’s father Christopher Kepner, of getting into a violent fight with their oldest son.

Thomas blames his son’s legal trouble on Shauntel’s decision to keep him away from his father, arguing that his future is now “in jeopardy” because of her choices.

Here’s what we know: Anna’s death happened during a six-day family cruise that set sail November 2. Shauntel, Christopher, Anna, and two of Shauntel’s children were all aboard. By the time the ship returned to the Port of Miami, Anna was dead.

The FBI has confirmed they’re investigating the case, but as of now, they’re not revealing much. The Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner has yet to release an official cause or manner of death.

Despite the swirling accusations and heartbreaking allegations, Anna’s family did find a moment to honor her life. In a public tribute, they remembered her as a radiant soul with big dreams—she wanted to join the Navy and become a K9 officer. Known affectionately as “Anna Banana,” she was described as a bold, funny, and big-hearted girl who loved beach days, sunshine, and surprising her loved ones with spontaneous acts of kindness.

Now, in the wake of this devastating loss, the people closest to her are locked in a courtroom fight, and a teenage boy—her stepbrother—is under federal investigation.

The unanswered questions are mounting, the emotions are running high, and the spotlight on this blended family’s turmoil is only growing brighter. One thing’s certain: there’s much more to this story, and we’re just scratching the surface.
