iPhone Turns Out Better Than Boeing Door After Falling 16,000 Ft

Portland, Ore. man Sean Bates was out for a walk on Sunday when he made an unexpected discovery – an iPhone that had fallen out of an Alaska Airlines flight that had made an emergency landing just a few days earlier.

According to Bates, he found the phone on the side of Portland’s Barnes Road and shared images of the device on social media.

He claimed that the phone was still in airplane mode with half a battery and open to a baggage claim for Alaska Airlines Flight 1282, which had made an emergency landing on Friday after a large section of the plane’s fuselage blew out in mid-air.

Bates also shared a video on TikTok where he explained how he found the phone and contacted the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) to report the discovery.

He was then told by the NTSB that it was the second phone from the flight to be found in the area.

The NTSB later confirmed that the iPhone found by Bates was one of the phones collected from the area and has been turned over to the airline.

They also stated that it is rare for objects to survive a 16,000-foot drop intact and that they will be investigating to confirm if the phone is indeed from the Alaska Airlines flight.

During a news conference on Sunday, NTSB chair Jennifer Homendy announced that they had also found a missing door plug, which could be crucial evidence in determining what caused the blowout. The door plug was found in the backyard of a Portland resident named Bob.

Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 was on its way to California when it made the emergency landing in Portland. Photos and videos from passengers on the flight show a large portion of the plane’s fuselage missing, with the night sky visible through the gap. Luckily, all passengers on the flight were unharmed, and Alaska Airlines has grounded a portion of their fleet to perform maintenance checks.

The airline stated that this type of incident is rare and that they are still investigating the cause.

In the meantime, the NTSB will be analyzing the discovered door plug and the iPhone found by Sean Bates to gather more information about what happened on Alaska Airlines Flight 1282.
