Francia Raisa is finally putting the rumors to rest — or at least trying to — when it comes to her relationship with Selena Gomez.
In a candid new interview, the actress, best known for her roles on “How I Met Your Father” and “The Secret Life of the American Teenager”, directly addressed years of speculation about a supposed falling out with Gomez, the pop star and actress to whom she donated a kidney back in 2017.
That donation, made during Gomez’s life-threatening battle with lupus, made headlines around the world. But since then, fans have noticed something strange: the two seemed to drift apart, and Raisa was nowhere to be seen at Gomez’s recent wedding to Benny Blanco.
Raisa made it clear that the rumors of bad blood are just that — rumors. Speaking in Spanish during an appearance at a bookstore event, she said, “I know she’s getting married, and I’m very happy for her.” Then came the line that had everyone leaning in: “She is already a billionaire and I am grateful that I could do that for her.”
Grateful, yes. But close? That’s still fuzzy.
Let’s back up for a second. After their widely publicized surgery in 2017 — which nearly killed Gomez after a ruptured artery required emergency intervention — the two women appeared tight. They showed off their matching scars, gave interviews, and praised each other. But things took a turn in 2022 when Gomez told “Rolling Stone” that Taylor Swift was her “only friend in the industry.” Raisa’s now-infamous one-word response? “Interesting.” The internet ran wild.
In her latest comments, Raisa brushed off claims that she was upset about how Gomez was treating her body post-surgery. “There are too many rumors. I’ve never said anything,” she said, dismissing talk that she was angry about Gomez drinking or smoking. She also spoke openly about the emotional toll of the donation — recounting how she was warned that recovery would be harder for the donor than the recipient, and revealing both she and Gomez suffered depression after the procedure.
Still, the lack of an invite to Gomez’s wedding raised eyebrows. A-listers like Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, and Zoe Saldaña were all in attendance. Raisa? She was dancing with a choreographer on Instagram.
To be fair, Raisa has said she and Gomez don’t always stay in constant contact — but when they do reconnect, it’s like no time has passed. That may be true, but when you’ve literally saved someone’s life, fans kind of expect more than a casual “we’re good.”
In the end, Raisa insists there’s no feud. “Nothing happened,” she told “USA Today”. “We don’t know what happened, but we needed that time apart.” Maybe so. But one thing is clear — fans will keep watching for clues until the two go on record together. Until then, the silence — and the guest list — speaks volumes.
