It’s a stunning fall from grace for a former fan favorite on “The Voice”. Kata Hay — whose legal name is Kata Huddleston — was arrested in Oklahoma last month after authorities say she fled Tennessee following a fatal DUI crash that claimed the life of an 82-year-old woman.
The crash happened on December 10 in Goodlettsville, Tennessee, near Interstate 65. According to police, Hay was allegedly driving under the influence, had an open alcohol container in her vehicle, and struck not one but two vehicles before fleeing the scene.
One of those vehicles was driven by 82-year-old Gayle Nichols, who later died from her injuries on December 12, prompting an upgraded vehicular homicide charge against Hay.
That charge sparked a multi-state manhunt. Law enforcement agencies in both Tennessee and Oklahoma worked together to locate her. And this is where the story takes a wild turn — tips from TikTok users actually helped crack the case. After a “Be On the Lookout” alert with Hay’s mugshot hit social media, citizen sleuths came through, leading to her arrest on December 17 in Oklahoma’s Osage County.
Hay, now 38, has had previous run-ins with the law. She was convicted of DUI in Davidson County back in 2017 and was still on probation for that charge at the time of the recent fatal crash. In 2022, she pleaded guilty and served six months in jail with added conditions, including a mental health evaluation and mandatory treatment.
Her legal troubles are in sharp contrast to the hopeful image she projected back in 2016 during her run on NBC’s “The Voice”. After years of trying to break through, Hay finally made it to the televised stage in Season 10, blowing away the judges with her performance of “Redneck Woman.”
She joined Christina Aguilera’s team and made it to the Top 20, advancing through the battle and knockout rounds before being eliminated in the first live playoff show with her rendition of “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.”
That was supposed to be her big break — a launchpad to stardom. Instead, her name is now in headlines for all the wrong reasons.
What once looked like the start of a career in the spotlight has turned into a tragic, spiraling story of addiction, poor choices, and fatal consequences.
Hay is currently being held in Osage County Jail as she awaits extradition back to Tennessee to face the vehicular homicide charge. For the loved ones of Gayle Nichols, a routine afternoon turned devastating. And for Kata Hay, the crash may be just the beginning of a very long road through the criminal justice system.
