It’s not often you see Cracker Barrel fans get riled up. Usually, the only heated debates inside those walls involve whether you start with biscuits or cornbread.
But lately? The mood has shifted—because the Old Country Store is in the middle of a makeover, and let’s just say… some folks think the “old” is being taken out of Old Country.
The Tennessee-based chain is rolling out “various levels of remodels,” according to chief marketing officer Sarah Moore, aiming for a brighter, more welcoming space while keeping that “country hospitality and charm” intact.
That’s the official line. But on Instagram, TikTok, and every corner of social media where chicken-and-dumpling purists gather, the reaction is more along the lines of: “What have you done with my Cracker Barrel?!”
We’re talking comments like “The remodel is 🤮” and “Now this place looks like every other chain restaurant—bland and boring.” One particularly passionate fan went all caps with “WHAT are you thinking with that interior?!”
Moore insists the classics aren’t going anywhere: the rocking chairs, the peg games, the wall full of antiques—all still part of the package. This is just a “freshening up,” she says, designed to draw in more guests while keeping longtime fans happy. But in the wild world of nostalgia, even swapping out a single light fixture can feel like heresy.
TikTok creator Rachel Love gave viewers a peek inside one of the new-look restaurants, racking up over 2 million views. Then @thecoachduggs dropped an eight-second video from a remodeled location with the blunt caption, “I hate it.” Six million views later, the message was loud and clear. His follow-up? “The people have spoken. Stop it.”
To their credit, Cracker Barrel’s leadership says they’re listening. Moore says they’re tracking the “social media narrative,” polling loyalists and casual diners alike, and tweaking their approach. But she also doubles down: “The things that make us truly who we are—that’s not changing.”
In other words, the country store you remember is still “in there somewhere”. It just might have a fresh coat of paint… and maybe, depending on your point of view, a little less soul in the process.
