Thursday Night Football always seems to deliver something unexpected, doesn’t it? And this week’s clash between the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Chargers didn’t disappoint. Amid the usual drama, fans witnessed a rarity that hasn’t occurred in almost 50 years—a successful “fair catch kick.”
With just eight seconds left in the first half, the Broncos, leading 21-10, opted to punt. Their plan? Let the clock run out and head to the locker room with their lead intact. But fate—or a penalty flag—had other plans. Denver was called for fair catch interference, stopping the clock and giving the Chargers a golden opportunity.
Enter the “fair catch kick.” For those unfamiliar, this is one of the NFL’s quirkiest rules. After a fair catch, the receiving team can attempt a free kick—without defensive pressure—from the spot of the catch.
It’s a rule that’s rarely invoked, and even rarer to succeed. But with the penalty tacking on 15 yards, Chargers kicker Cameron Dicker stepped up to attempt a 57-yard shot.
Now, this wasn’t your typical field goal setup. No snap, no rush—just Dicker, the ball, and the uprights.
After some visible confusion on the sidelines and a moment of adjustment, Dicker launched a clean, powerful kick straight through, cutting Denver’s lead to eight before halftime.
It was historic. The last time anyone pulled this off? San Diego Chargers kicker Ray Wersching in 1976. Dicker’s 57-yard blast set a new NFL record for the longest fair catch kick, surpassing Paul Hornung’s 52-yard boot from 1964.
The spectacle underscored how unusual the fair catch kick is—it marked just the 27th recorded attempt in NFL history and only the seventh successful one. The rarity and precision of the play made it a moment to remember in what was already a thrilling game.
