Hey there, it’s Madison Lee, and I have some breaking news from Hollywood! The latest movie adaptation of the popular Nintendo video game, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” has become the first film of 2023 to hit the $1 billion mark at the global box office. Can you believe it?
According to Variety, the Chris Pratt-led movie earned $490 million in North America and $532 million internationally as of Sunday, making it only the fifth film since the pandemic to hit such a monumental mark. The movie’s success has also made it the first-ever film based on a video game to have this kind of success, which is huge news for fans everywhere!
“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” boasts a star-studded cast of voices, with Chris Pratt as the voice of Mario and Jack Black voicing the love-struck tortured villain, Bowser. The film has been a hit with audiences too, earning a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. One audience member wrote, “I took my four-year-old son to watch this movie as he’s super into Mario, and he LOVED it. I loved the humor in the movie, the colors, and animation. It is a good storyline and just a great family-friendly movie. I have no complaints.”
THEY DID IT! ????????
‘THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE’ crossed $1B at the worldwide box office.
It’s the 11th animated movie to reach that mark, and the first one since 2019 with ‘FROZEN II’.

On the other hand, critics have been less enthusiastic, scoring the movie a 59% on Rotten Tomatoes. One critic from the Chicago Reader wrote, “Among the many errors of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, screenwriter Matthew Fogel plops him and his brother Luigi into a milquetoast Brooklyn family that doubts them and disrespects their small-business dreams.” Ouch!
Despite mixed reviews, the film has clearly been a success with moviegoers, especially families looking for a fun and entertaining movie to watch together. And let’s not forget the historic achievement of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” becoming the first video game adaptation to hit $1 billion at the box office. This is definitely something for video game fans and Hollywood executives alike to celebrate!
