Lewis, a 55-year-old man from Denton, Texas, was arrested and charged with stalking—a Level 5 felony—after relocating to Indianapolis to pursue his obsession with the 22-year-old WNBA star.
His relentless barrage of sexually explicit messages on the social media platform X escalated to a point where Clark felt compelled to alter her public appearance out of fear for her safety.
The messages began innocently enough in December, though laced with nonsensical undertones. But as weeks passed, the tone shifted drastically. Lewis made increasingly disturbing posts, suggesting an “imaginary relationship” with Clark, while also sharing unsettling fantasies and veiled threats.
The most chilling messages included a statement about relocating to Indianapolis to be “closer” to Clark and a bizarre scenario involving her disappearance, underscoring the alarming escalation of his behavior.
Authorities in Indianapolis first became aware of Lewis’s actions on January 8, after tracing the messages to his hotel.
During questioning, Lewis admitted to being in what he called an “imaginary relationship” with Clark but showed no intention of ceasing his harassment. His arrest followed shortly after.
Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears commended Clark for her bravery in stepping forward.
He highlighted the importance of addressing harassment early, noting the broader implications for women facing similar threats. “This case shows that online harassment can quickly escalate to actual threats of physical violence,” Mears stated, urging victims to report incidents to authorities.
Clark is not alone in enduring such harassment. Similar cases, such as the stalking of UConn star Paige Bueckers, demonstrate that high-profile women athletes are increasingly becoming targets of obsessive and dangerous individuals. Bueckers’ stalker, Robert Cole Parmalee, even went as far as purchasing an engagement ring, showcasing how such obsessions can escalate if left unchecked.
These incidents underscore the urgent need for stronger protections for public figures, particularly women, against online harassment.
